BSNL EVDO Card Internet Connection Review

Bsnl provides wireless Internet connection by the EVDO card. The speed of this connection depends on the distance of the user from the bsnl evdo tower; if the tower is closer then the speed can go as high as 2.4 MBPS. My tower is a bit far from my home, so the speed remains at around 50 to 100 Kbps, but sometimes it goes a lot higher than that. Usage is unlimited upload and download.

The cost of this Internet connection is about Rs 500+ without service tax, so expect another 100 INR when you get your bill. When comparing this to other wireless connections, this service sounds pretty cheap. The airtel broadband costs Rs 800 and tata indicom costs Rs 1100 for unlimited usage.

Performance is pretty nice so far, I keep it on throughout the day, that’s from 8 AM in the morning to about 12 in the night and it stays 100% online with no dis-connection. The speed is not much; hope they get another tower near my home, very unlikely though.

I have not tried the support yet, because so far I have not faced any problems. The installation was easy, and then I worked out the settings and it connected quickly. Downloads are slow but the surfing speeds are good. Upload and download speeds are both same, which is a very good thing as other Internet connections gives a very low upload speed. For a price so low, this service is absolutely recommended as a standby Internet connection and if the tower is closer from your place then it can work out to be a very good primary Internet connection too.

      • admin says:

        hi Avinash,
thanks for your reply, i guess its a very good tip, today will go and buy an usb extension cable for the evdo card, that way i can keep it on the window which is a bit far from my desktop.

  5. admin says:

    hi chintu,
sometimes the spyware and adware in your system causes the speed to go down, you can try some virus/adware remover to clean up your pc, that might help.

also, there is a small antina of thing on the evdo card, pull it up if you have not already, its a small little stick [2 intches] one side fixed and another ready to be pulled up, actually slide up,

  6. swanand says:

  7. admin says:

  10. P.D. SHRAVAGI says:

Hi Iam having BSNL EVDO card but not gatting speed more than 100kbps what is the reason. ohherwise Ihave to surrender it.

    • admin says:

It happens sometimes, the speed goes down. first contact bsnl and find our how far is the nearest bsnl evdo tower from your location. If the tower is too far away, that is more than 3+ kms then the speed will remain low.

  11. P.D. SHRAVAGI says:

TO whome to cantact in case of any help regarding this card

  12. SANJOY says:

When the new EVDO scheme will be available in kolkata? Still EVDO Data Card is selling at Rs3500INR though On 1st july 2009 circular was published on the NET. But our service provider is in dark about roaming & promotional offer.Pl help..

    • admin says:

      hi SANJOY,
take a printout of the latest evdo scheme announcement page and show it to the bsnl officer. bsnl guys are like the state government officials, they outdated and needs to be sacked big time.

also, from the bsnl website, make sure the new scheme is available in your citi.

  13. Vidyanand says:

    Hi,

Is this service available in Bangalore?

    • Praveen says:

  14. Avinash says:

Note: Speed of EVDO completely.depends on the strength of the signal what u get….so try to get max signal bar available from 4-5 bars…..

  15. shiman says:

I am using BSNL EVDO card with the 2.4mpbs speed and unlimited download scheme, but i am not able to do a voice chat using the evdo card. That means the speed of the internet using this EVDO is worst.

A simple voice chat is not supported with this internet connection.

I paid 3000Rs/- for the device and purchased that BSNL will never do cheat, they said 2.4mpbs and i am not even getting 30- 40kbps speed

I thought they have said 2.4mpbs and at the worst case i will get 1mpbs ( but atlast the BSNL cheated i am not even getting 30-40kpbs internet speed)

Can anyone tell me where to complaint regarding this and get it fixed with the speed

I am paying 550Rs/- monthly, which is really a worthless.

Some times the browsing speed also gets dumped.

Please raise this issue in the BSNL head of department and get the thing fixed.

  16. gymnos says:

For all BSNL EVDO card users in Bangalore. You need to reconfigure your card. There as been a technical change in the bsnl database and all the cards are configured to cdma 1x only.It would take you just 5 minuite. So hurry and get it configured for EVDO signal.

  17. vs says:

I am using EVDO card. This is very goood. I am getting good speed however the torrents are slow around 10kb per sec, this also becomes good at night around 50 kb which is very good.

The card is really good but will not work well only when signals are not poper.

    • Uttoran Sen says:

      hi Vibhu Singh,
welcome to sniff india, and thanks for your comment,

the download speeds here are usually 30+ but sometimes, very rarely though, i have also got as high as 300+ Kbps which completed downloads in a few moments,

am over all happy with this bsnl evdo service, just those odd days when it goes down and dosenot connects makes me go mad, otherwise its just fine.

  18. Gaurav Sachdeva says:

Just Yesterday i bring the EVDO card from the BSNL, I am confirmed by there techincal head it work in roaming also, as far as the speed is concern, with full 4 bars i am getting around 600-750 Kbps, in the complete day, connection is very fast, but still to check in the roaming, in Rs 650 i am getting un-limited usage, where other players like reliance & tata photon are charging very high for this, All over india roaming has also been activated, BSNl is also promoting this service. the only problem with connection is when you are using multi windows for the browsing it will be slow, torrent are also downloading at good speed, but torrent cannot let you judge about the speed of connection, as it is depend upon the avalliabilty of peers.

I recommend to go for it, as it cheap and fast than reliance and tata.

    • Uttoran Sen says:

      hi Gaurav Sachdeva,
great to know that evdo is working good for you, about the multiple windows thing, why don’t you try multiple tabs like on firefox, i have never seen speed go down in any tabs so far,

      regards,
      uttoransen,

  19. Rahul Buzz says:

I own reliance, What to do with this reliance data card?? Can i use bsnl with the same?

    • Uttoran Sen says:

      hi rahul buzz,
welcome to sniff india and thanks for your comments,

i have not used Relience card so far, let me know hows the speed, performance and price of it, but as far as the evdo is concerned, i think its really good. at just around Rs 650 month, it allows unlimited upload and download at about a couple of hundred KBPS on an average day :)

      • Rahul says:

I am using reliance data card unlimited usage for 230 kbps. monthly rental is 800rs. And give decent surfing speed.
I think bsnl evdo card is good but no roaming provided by bsnl.

        • Uttoran Sen says:

          hi rahul,
what are the other payment schemes available for reliance data card, am planing to use it as a second connection along with bsnl evdo… but Rs 800 is a little too much for the secondary connection…

          • Rahul says:

If you are thinking to buy 230-250 kbps data card. All reliance, tata indicom and idea is providing moderate speed for surfing and streaming video. Also, this is highly depends of connection strength.

            230 kbps
Price for unlimited reliance is 800+tax
            400 rs night unlimited
            Tata indicom 700+tax unlimited
            Idea = 599+tax.unlimited Instrument cost 2,000rs.

But i think you should buy 3.5 MBPS data card of reliance or tata indicomm because they are providing 10-20 GB of surfing and download in same price and speed will be assured at 600-800 rs/month.

  20. TechChunks says:

Thanks for the review. I was looking for the same since a long time. Currently I use Reliance Broadband+ 3.1 Mbps and am pretty happy with the service though.

  21. karuna says:

can u told me that weather they provide dynamic ip or not beacause for that we can download from rapidshare

  22. Uttoran Sen says:

i think perhaps a usage based fees should be suitable for a second internet connection. like this bsnl evdo goes down for a day or two once a month… but for those few days paying for another connection that costs 800 Rs monthly is a little too much… am looking for another internet connection to run alongside bsnl evdo, not as a replacement or an alternative :)

3.5 MBPS is a little too much, i hardly download anything and for suring, no one needs speeds like those :P i think the idea/airtel is still not available in the jharkhand area…
