Earthquake in various parts of India – Kolkata – West Bengal – Assam

A high magnitude earthquake was felt in the eastern Indian states like Assam, west Bengal etc. The center of the earthquake was Bhutan where it was measured 6.3 on the Richter scale. The quake happened 10kms deep and countries like Bhutan and Tibet are also hit. First quake was felt just a few hours before, at about 2:23 PM in the afternoon. Mild tremors were reported in some parts of Kolkata.

Assam, which got it’s worst hit in 1897, parts of West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunanchal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram are currently in the quake hit zone. Jharkhand, as a neighboring state has not felt any earthquake symptoms so far. However, no news of loss of lives has been reported so far from India.

The US agencies have reported the earthquake center to be “Mongar”, situated about 180+ kilometers from the Bhutan capital – “Thimphu”. The strongest hit happened in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. In India, the worst hit is Assam where some buildings cracked and people started running on the streets. The quake was 20 seconds long but the after shocks were felt for 2+ minutes.
