Oil Strike Called off

India was held to ransom once again. Not by foreign originated terrorist groups but by our very own people. Our very own public sector employees of the oil industry. The officers of the public sector oil companies called a strike demanding higher salary and wages. The whole nation was brought to a standstill over a course of six days. Vehicles couldn’t run for want of petrol and diesel and the situation threatened to paralyze the trade and commerce of India. Existing supplies ran out in quick time and it was a common sight to see serpentine queues in front of petrol bunks and oil stations.
To make matters worse there was a strike called by the truckers union and there was no possibility of transporting oil to privately owned petrol bunks. The only way out for the government was contemplating the use of army vehicles and personnel to transport oil. This was the last option the government intended to resort to but luckily for the citizens of India, wiser sense prevailed and the strike was called off.
The strike was called out after the government took an aggressive and firm stand against the strikers. The government threatened the striking officials with legal action and possible arrest. This forceful position taken by the authorities unnerved the defiant official and they finally relented. The petroleum minister made a statement saying that the government will look into the demands of the strikers but this presumably was done to appease the striking officials by not adding further insult to injury.
Surely for once the carrot and stick policy of the government seems to have worked. All private sector oil companies have started functioning and they have reportedly even offered to work on Sundays and holidays till such time the oil situation returned to normal. All said and done, the economic damage to the county’s economy and the hardship caused to the general public is not reversible. However, let us hope a lesson was learnt by anyone who thought by striking and paralyzing the country to justify his or her demands, just or not, will be tolerated either by this country or by her government.
