Rajasthan – Desert Romance

Rajasthan evokes many thoughts in the minds of the people when they hear the word mentioned. There is a continuous mixed feeling of passion, romance, adventure, heroism and melancholy associated with this big state situated on the north western borders of India, landlocked between Pakistan and the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. This beautiful state is made up mostly of a vast expanse of hot sand and the Thar Desert makes up for close to eighty percent of total land. This desert has given rise to many myths and legends and the local folk songs are mixed with tales of heroism, love, sacrifice and valor. Nowhere in India can you find so much history and culture, a culture that has with stood the test of time and still retains its original flavor and essence, unaffected by changes in the so called civilized society outside of its desert borders.
This mysterious desert state is home to many formidable forts and splendid palaces, which bear testimony to the wealth and splendor that, the noble people of this region enjoyed hundreds of years back. Home to the fierce warrior class called the Rajputs; most of the kings of Rajasthan belonged to this breed of fighters. All these factors combined with the incredibly beautiful desert landscape offer the tourist an enchanting Rajasthan experience. And this is precisely the reason why millions of tourists throng to the desert sands of this glorious state. The climate is unbearably hot in the summer months of June July and this period is best avoided, unless you want to look like a fried omelet. The city of Jaipur, the capital also called the pink city is home to a lot of palaces, like the Hawa Mahal whose architectural splendor is seen to be believed. In fact all the other cities of Rajasthan like Jodhpur, Bikaner and Udaipur are full of beautiful palaces and imposing forts. The festivals of Jaisalmer and Pushkar attract a lot of tourists every year, both within India and from other countries.
The cities of Rajasthan are well connected to the other cities of India by rail and road and the capital is well served by many private airlines. The state has accommodation to suit every budget, starting from backpack camps to seven star hotels and if you want to experience the way of life of the Rajput kings, then you can also check into heritage hotels which are palaces converted to star category hotels. So take a desert safari on a camel or a four-wheel drive or simply sit back and enjoy a peacock dance in the rain. When the sunsets, make sure to be there in the sand dunes, because watching a sunset in the desert, will haunt you with pleasant memories for the rest of your life.
